Sarcasam will get you to some interesting places

The other day Katie sent an email around all the engineers at work discussing evil unit tests. I sent back a stupid reply about "I dont need to do such stuff I have 10000 users tesing my work for me." Or some such crap.

Katie being the clever person she is remembered something about a perl module that can automate some aspects of doing web based tests. Her friend Dave uses it a lot in his job.

Dave kindly provided some simple examples of how to use it to automate simple tasks. It looks really good. There is even a sub-module to slow things down to prevent you hammering your server.

I have a column on using WWW::Mechanize to verify the health of a website at http://www.stonehenge.com/merlyn/LinuxMag/col53.html. And check out part 2 - using Test::Harness to then page me with only the changed status items - http://www.stonehenge.com/merlyn/LinuxMag/col54.html .

Thanks for this Randall. I am presently writing a lot of manual test scripts for ingenta and I think using WWW::Mechanize could make like a lot easier all round.

If only I had known about it in a previous job where I ended up hand testing about 10000 static web pages manually.

I must admit Perl isnt my strong point though. I must re-read a couple of your books on my bookshelf.
