This is what Nasa should be doing instead of going to mars 

World Wind

This is a virtual globe that NASA has released as an open source application. You can spin a globe around in 3D to your hearts content and then zoom into see individual fields in an agricultural area. It downloads the satelite images on the fly or you can download a dvd sized lump of data to get the maps locally.

Thats not all though... it links to wikipedia to pull out articles on interesting places and landmarks. It can also pull in weather satellite images for the whole globe and animate them with a alpha channel over the normal images. I have only just got it and will be playing with it for a long time to come.
